Martin Schulz, et M. Calls for the Ukrainian authorities to establish an independent and impartial international legal panel to report on possible violations of fundamental rights and freedoms in the cases of Yulia Tymoshenko and other members of her government; notes with satisfaction the outcomes of the meeting of the President of the European Parliament, Mr Martin Schulz, with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mr Mykola Azarov, and expects the Ukrainian authorities to respond to the agreed proposal by providing guidelines for its prompt implementation so as to ensure, in cooperation with, and in support of, the Charité medical team, proper medical treatment for Ms Yulia Tymoshenko, as well as judicial scrutiny by an authoritative and competent EU personality of the appeal and cassation processes and future trials of the former Prime Minister of Ukraine;

Calls on Ukrainian authorities to respect the rights of Yulia Tymoshenko and other former members of the government, including the right to honest, fair, independent and transparent appeal process; expresses its concern regarding violent treatment of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, as reported by the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights;

Following the news of her conviction, the Minister of Foreign Affairs issued a very strong statement expressing Canada's concern over the ways in which the arrest, prosecution and conviction of Yulia Tymoshenko were carried out by Ukrainian authorities.

Monsieur le président, je suis ravi de pouvoir participer au présent débat exploratoire, dont le but est de permettre à la Chambre de prendre note de l'état général de la démocratie en Ukraine, tout particulièrement du parti pris politique apparent, de la poursuite et de la condamnation arbitraires de l'ancienne première ministre Ioulia Timochenko par les autorités ukrainiennes.
Mr. Chair, I am delighted to participate in this take note debate, that the House take note of the general state of democracy in Ukraine, particularly the apparent political bias and arbitrary prosecution and conviction of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko by Ukrainian authorities.

Mr. Chair, it is certainly a privilege and honour to speak with respect to this motion that expresses concern regarding the ongoing erosion of democracy in Ukraine, including the most recent politically motivated, arbitrary prosecution and conviction of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko by Ukrainian authorities.
