Definition: An acute psychotic disorder in which hallucinations, delusions or perceptual disturbances are obvious but markedly variable, changing from day to day or even from hour to hour. Emotional turmoil with intense transient feelings of happiness or ecstasy, or anxiety and irritability, is also frequently present. The polymorphism and instability are characteristic for the overall clinical picture and the psychotic features do not justify a diagnosis of schizophrenia (F20.-). Définition: Trouble transitoire, survenant chez un individu ne présentant aucun autre trouble mental manifeste, à la suite d'un facteur de stress physique et psychique exceptionnel et disparaissant habituellement en quelques heures ou en quelques jours. La survenue et la gravité d'une réaction aiguë à un facteur de stress sont influencées par des facteurs de vulnérabilité individuels et par la capacité du sujet à faire face à un traumatisme. La symptomatologie est typiquement mixte et variable et comporte initialement un état d'hébétude caractérisé par un certain rétrécissement du champ de la conscience et de l'attention, une impossibilité à intégrer des stimuli et une désorientation. Definition: A transient disorder that develops in an individual without any other apparent mental disorder in response to exceptional physical and mental stress and that usually subsides within hours or days. Individual vulnerability and coping capacity play a role in the occurrence and severity of acute stress reactions. The symptoms show a typically mixed and changing picture and include an initial state of daze with some constriction of the field of consciousness and narrowing of attention, inability to comprehend stimuli, and disorientation. This state may be followed either by further withdrawal from the surrounding situation (to the extent of a dissociative stupor - F44.2), or by agitation and over-activity (flight reaction or fugue). Autonomic signs of panic anxiety (tachycardia, sweating, flushing) are commonly present. The symptoms usually appear within minutes of the impact of the stressful stimulus or event, and disappear within two to three days (often within hours). Partial or complete amnesia (F44.0) for the episode may be present. Cette catégorie concerne des enfants ayant un retard mental prononcé (Q.I. inférieur à 34) associé à une hyperactivité importante, une perturbation majeure de l'attention et des comportements stéréotypés. Definition: An ill-defined disorder of uncertain nosological validity. The category is designed to include a group of children with severe mental retardation (IQ below 35) who show major problems in hyperactivity and in attention, as well as stereotyped behaviours. They tend not to benefit from stimulant drugs (unlike those with an IQ in the normal range) and may exhibit a severe dysphoric reaction (sometimes with psychomotor retardation) when given stimulants. In adolescence, the overactivity tends to be replaced by underactivity (a pattern that is not usual in hyperkinetic children with normal intelligence). This syndrome is also often associated with a variety of developmental delays, either specific or global. The extent to which the behavioural pattern is a function of low IQ or of organic brain damage is not known.
