Parmi les principaux objectifs qu’elle proposait spécifiquement dans sa communication la Commission indiquait que l’UE devrait s’employer à soutenir l’élaboration future d’un système coopératif de gouvernance arctique s’appuyant sur la convention des Nations unies sur le droit de la mer (UNCLOS) et préconisait la mise en œuvre dans leur intégralité des obligations existantes plutôt que de proposer de nouveaux instruments juridiques.
In its communication, the Commission specifically proposed, as one of its policy objectives, that the EU should work to uphold the further development of a cooperative Arctic governance system based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and advocated the full implementation of all existing obligations, rather than proposing new legal instruments.
