Judy Sgro: With respect to the Veterans Affairs program for the compensation of those who were exposed to Agent Orange: (a) how did the government come to the decision on the years that would be covered for those who were exposed; (b) how did the government arrive at the compensation amount of $20,000; (c) why will the government not compensate the widows of those who were exposed and met the qualifying conditions, but who have since passed away; (d) how many applications for compensation has the government received to date; (e) how many of those applications have been approved; (f) how many applications have been denied; (g) how many of those denied were refused because the veteran has since passed away; (h) how many of the applications denied were due to a medical condition that was not deemed to meet the government’s criteria; (i) what mechanisms did the government use to determine which illnesses would be covered and which would not be considered for compensation; (j) how many cheques have been issued and delivered; and (k) was the departmental funding cut of $33.6 million completely due to a program criteria which resulted in lower than expected numbers of beneficiaries?

Je ne vais pas parler du contenu de l’accord, puisque je pense qu’il est évident que ce qui a été négocié est conforme aux normes européennes en matière de protection juridique et de protection des données personnelles. Cependant, je voudrais maintenant obtenir quelques réponses en ce qui concerne la procédure, puisqu’encore une fois, le Conseil a décidé de se réunir à huis clos pour prendre des décisions qui affectent les citoyens.
I am not going to say anything about the content, as I think it is self-evident that what has been negotiated is in line with European standards of legal protection and the protection of personal data, but I do now want to get a couple of answers about the process, as this is the umpteenth example of the Council taking decisions affecting citizens behind closed doors.

Welcomes the prompt reaction of the European Commission, which decided to allocate €370 000 to provide humanitarian support for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon in order to contribute for the vital needs of about 30 000 Palestinian refugees already affected by extremely difficult living conditions and now finding themselves trapped in a conflict that does not concern them; urges all parties in the conflict to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and, in particular, to facilitate the delivery of aid and the evacuation of innocent civilians;
