They accepted those findings. But they also noted that during the pendency of the appeal, which took a number of years, the Israeli prosecutors, the same people who never retreated from their contention that he was Ivan the Terrible—not the defence, but the Israel prosecutors—found documents in the former Soviet Union—by the time the appeal was heard the Soviet Union had collapsed—and witness statements suggesting that the man known as Ivan the Terrible was one Ivan Marchenko.
