With these words, Mr Bangemann opened the seminar organized by the Commission in Brussels on the prospects opened up by the European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG).

Cette approche implique, a ajouté M. Bangemann, que nous mettions en place : - une politique de concurrence vraiment européenne; - une politique commerciale ouverte (la compétitivité est la seule arme véritable contre le protectionnisme); - une intensification de la politique de RD. Mr Bangemann went on to point out that this approach requires : - a truly European competition policy, - an open commercial policy (competitiveness is the only truly effective weapon against protectionism) ; and - intensification of R D policy. In short, he pointed out, we must drop the defensive attitude that too often typifies the debate on industrial policy in Europe.
