Après débat, la résolution suivante est adoptée telle qu'elle a été modifiée : Déplorant les pertes de vie et les autres graves conséquences de la tentative de coup d’État du 19 mai 2000 au Fidji; Conscient que, depuis la tentative de coup d’État, le premier ministre fidjien Mahendra Chaudhry et un certain nombre de ses ministres sont tenus en otage à Suva et que, selon les rapports, le président du Fidji, Ratu Sir Kamiesese Mara, a été prié de former un gouvernement provisoire qui va renvoyer le premier ministre démocratiquement élu et envisager d’accorder l’amnistie aux auteurs du coup d’État; Réaffirmant l’importance de la remise en liberté inconditionnelle des otages et du rétablissement du gouvernement démocratiquement élu du Fidji; Le Comité permanent des affaires étrangères et du commerce international recommande que le gouvernement du Canada : Poursuive les initiatives diplomatiques, en association avec les membres du Commonwealth, d’autres États aux vues similaires et le Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies, pour assurer le rétablissement du gouvernement démocratiquement élu du Fidji; Fasse savoir sans équivoque que, si le Fidji ne rétablit pas la démocratie conformément à la Constitution de 1997, le Canada va préconiser qu’il soit expulsé du Commonwealth et envisager de prendre contre lui des sanctions économiques.
After debate, the following resolution was agreed to as amended: Regretting the loss of life and other serious implications of the May 19 2000 coup in Fiji; Aware that following the coup attempt, Fijian Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and a number of his Cabinet ministers have been held hostage in Suva, and conscious that, according to reports, the President of Fiji, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, was asked to form an interim government that would see the removal of the democratically elected Prime Minister and his Cabinet, and possible amnesty for the coup participants. Reaffirming the importance of the unconditional release of the hostages and the restoration of the democratically elected government of Fiji; The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade recommends that the Government of Canada: Continue diplomatic initiatives, in association with Commonwealth members, other like-minded states and in the United Nations Security Council, to ensure the restoration of the democratically elected government of Fiji; Take the position, in no uncertain terms, that should Fiji fail to restore democratic rule in accordance with the 1997 Constitution, Canada will advocate its suspension from the Commonwealth, and will consider means to impose economic sanctions on Fiji.
