IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

Points out that the EU imports 53% of its energy at an annual cost of around EUR 400 billion, which makes it the largest energy importer in the world; recalls that 61% of the imported gas is used in buildings mainly for heating and cooling and that energy demand in the building sector is responsible for about 40% of energy consumption in the EU and a third of natural gas use; stresses therefore that gains in energy efficiency would have a significant impact on reducing EU energy imports from third countries and on the trade deficits of Member States, thereby reinforcing the EU’s negotiating position in external energy-related matters; is convinced that a binding energy-efficiency target would be a cost-efficient way to achieve the goal of energy self-sufficiency; points out that unemployment could be reduced by an ambitious programme for increasing the energy efficiency of housing throughout the EU;

19. insiste sur les fortes relations de l'Union avec le Groenland et sur l'importance géostratégique de ce territoire; prend acte des priorités du gouvernement groenlandais, avec un accent plus fort sur le développement économique et l'exploitation des matières premières; demande à la Commission et au SEAE d'étudier comment l'Union pourrait contribuer au développement durable du Groenland et lui porter assistance en ce domaine, de façon à prendre en compte aussi bien les préoccupations environnementales que les besoins du développement économique;

Stresses that the EU shipbuilding industry has the potential to increase its contribution to growth and employment by exploiting the opportunities arising from demand for ‘clean ships’ (increased energy efficiency and reduced SOx and NOx emissions) as well as vessels and structures suitable for the construction, installation and operation of offshore wind farms; calls on the EU shipbuilding industry to take up this opportunity, especially given the expected increase in short sea shipping along the EU coastline;

The European Council agreed that the EU could usefully contribute to the reconstruction and the emergence of a stable, secure and democratic Iraq through an integrated mission, which could inter alia promote closer collaboration between the different actors across the criminal justice system and strengthen the management capacity of senior and high-potential officials from the police, judiciary and penitentiary and improve skills and procedures in criminal investigation in full respect for the rule of law and human rights.
