L’année 2011 est l’Année européenne du volontariat; l’Année européenne du vieillissement actif, proposée par la Commission pour 2012, sera aussi l’occasion de mettre en lumière et de favoriser la contribution que les volontaires âgés apportent à la société.
2011 is the "European Year of Volunteering". The European Year for Active Ageing proposed by the Commission for 2012 will also be an opportunity to highlight and promote the contribution of older volunteers to society.

L’expérience de la préparation et de la réalisation de l’Année a été partagée avec les autres services concernés de la Commission, notamment la DG Emploi et affaires sociales, qui coordonne l’Année européenne de lutte contre la pauvreté et l’exclusion sociale (2010), et la DG Communication, qui est chargée de l’Année européenne du volontariat (2011).
Experience of preparing for and implementing the Year has been shared with other relevant Commission services, notably DG Employment and Social Affairs, coordinating the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and DG Communication, coordinating the 2011 European Year of Volunteering.

Youth on the Move will support these actions, inter alia, by proposing a Council Recommendation to encourage Member States to tackle the high level of early school leaving, through the 2011 European Year of Volunteering and with a Council Recommendation on the validation of non-formal and informal learning.

The data collected to date indicate the EYV 2011 had a number of positive outcomes and show how important it is to continue to work along the same lines in order to ensure that volunteering goes beyond being the focus of a one-year campaign in a sector of strategic importance to the EU (see, inter alia, Council Decision 2010/37/EC of 27 November 2009 on the European Year of Voluntary Activities Promoting Active Citizenship) and becomes a key part of the EU’s social and cultural cohesion policy.
