It seemed to me quite appropriate to put this statement by Stephen Lewis at the United Nations within the larger context of the Jean Chrétien pledge to Africa, namely Bill C-9, because it fits perfectly in it and it also gives us a broader picture as to why we are all engaged in this global effort, which is really bringing out the best in humanity and definitely appeals to the basic and most positive constructive sentiments that inspire the global community in every country.

Si nous discutons ici du projet de loi et proposons qu'il soit envoyé au comité, c'est pour que la faille soit corrigée. C'est une occasion où nous devrions exprimer notre gratitude non seulement à l'envoyé spécial Stephen Lewis, qui a accompli un travail tout à fait herculéen et qui a littéralement mis sa vie en jeu dans le combat contre la pandémie du VIH-sida, mais aussi aux autres héros et héroïnes sur le terrain: les ONG qui abattent un travail inimaginable dans les villages et collectivités d'Afrique; les représentants ici au Canada qui nous ont aidés à sortir de notre ignorance et de notre complaisance relativement à cette pandémie du VIH-sida.
This is an occasion when we should express our gratitude, not only to the incredibly Herculean work of special envoy, Stephen Lewis, who has literally laid his life on the line in this struggle against the HIV-AIDS pandemic, but the other heroes and heroines on the ground: the NGOs in the African villages and communities who are doing unimaginable work; the representatives here in Canada who have helped to deal with our ignorance and our complacency in relation to this HIV-AIDS pandemic.
