Derrière le souci apparent et certainement sincère de vouloir renforcer la sécurité alimentaire en Europe, nous sommes donc bien en fait dans la logique habituelle : celle qui entend mettre en tutelle les États membres, dans ce domaine comme dans les autres, vider de leurs compétences et de leur efficacité les instances nationales, au profit d’une large institution européenne molle et flasque, théoriquement indépendante et en réalité contrôlée par la Commission et sa philosophie de libre-échangisme absolu.
Looking behind the apparent and certainly sincere concern to improve food safety in Europe, in fact we thus find ourselves faced with the usual logic: the aim is to get control over the Member States, in this sphere as in the others, to strip the national authorities of their powers and effectiveness and hand them over to a large, limp and flabby European institution, theoretically independent but in reality controlled by the Commission and its philosophy of absolutely free trade.

J’espère que, de ce fait, les parlementaires seront, par exemple, mieux informés des négociations du Millenium Round qu’ils ne l’ont été de l’Uruguay Round, bien que cette Europe ait obéi jusqu’ici à des forces puissantes qui veulent le libre-échangisme le plus absolu et qui préfèrent agir dans le secret.
I hope that, thanks to this, the Members of Parliament will, for example, be better informed regarding the negotiations of the Millennium Round than they were for the Uruguay Round, although this Europe has to date been obedient to the powerful forces which want free trade to prevail absolutely, but which prefer to act in secret.
