Même si l’appel à l’unité vient des États-Unis d’Amérique - et même si nous devons toujours nous demander ce qu’ils veulent vraiment en lançant cet appel -, nos relations transatlantiques exigent que nous leur fassions une faveur et nous unissions, car ils savent que ce n’est qu’en combinant l’énorme puissance scientifique, économique, culturelle et sociale que, de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, nous pourrons accumuler, que nous pourrons apporter une contribution effective à la résolution des problèmes du monde.
Even if it is from the United States of America that the call to unity comes – and even if we always have to ask what they actually want when they issue such a call – our relationship across the Atlantic demands of us that we do them a favour and unite, for they know that it is only by combining the enormous scientific, economic, cultural and social power that we, on both sides of the Atlantic, can accumulate, that we can make an effective contribution to resolving the world’s problems.
