Since 1989, Costas Kastanias has been serving a life sentence with hard labour in maximum security prisons in Egypt in connection with the case of the motor boat, the 'Thanasis'.

Dans sa réponse à ma question orale H-0950/01 sur le cas de Kostas Kastania, détenu depuis 1989 dans des quartiers de haute sécurité des prisons égyptiennes, M. de Miguel, Président en exercice du Conseil et Ministre des Affaires européennes, a fait preuve de compassion et s'est engagé à faire en sorte que la Présidence du Conseil intervienne auprès du Caire en faveur de Kostas Kastania.
In his considered response to my oral question H-0950/01 on the case of Kostas Kastanias who has been held in maximum security prisons in Egypt since 1989, Mr De Miguel, the Spanish Minister for European Affairs and President-in-Office of the Council, pledged that the Presidency of the Council would make representations to the authorities in Cairo in the case of Kostas Kastanias.

L'affaire met en émoi l'opinion publique grecque : les conditions régnant dans les prisons égyptiennes sont inhumaines (prisons de trois mètres sur quatre, où croupissent vingt détenus) et la santé de M. Kostas Kastanias est irréversiblement altérée.
There is intense public concern about this case in Greece owing to the inhuman conditions in Egyptian prisons ( 3 by 4 metre cells housing 20 people) and the fact that Costas Kastanias' health has been irreparably damaged.
