Regulation (EC) No 1407/2002 on State aid to the coal industry was therefore adopted on the basis of Articles 87(3)(e) and 89 of the EC Treaty with the objective of maintaining this industry sector by providing for State subsidies to support the restructuring of the coal industry and help the latter to face the consequences of major cutbacks in its activity.
