Comme cela a été souligné, au lendemain de la catastrophe, dans une déclaration conjointe de la haute représentante/vice-présidente, Catherine Ashton, et du commissaire De Gucht, l'Union européenne a une responsabilité toute particulière à agir, compte tenu de ses relations commerciales avec le Bangladesh (elle constitue son plus gros marché d’exportation dans le secteur de la confection) et de l’importance de l'industrie textile pour le développement du pays. C’est pourquoi l’UE, avec les autorités du Bangladesh, les États-Unis et l’Organisation internationale du travail (OIT) , a mis en place le pacte sur la durabilité voici un an.
As stressed in the immediate aftermath of the incident in a joint statement by High Representative/Vice-President Catherine Ashton and Commissioner De Gucht, the EU's trade relations with Bangladesh and the importance of the ready-made garment (RMG) industry to the country's development gave the EU – as Bangladesh's largest export market of RMGs – a special responsibility to act. This is why the EU, together with the authorities of Bangladesh, the United States and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) , launched the Sustainability Compact one year ago.
