From the Canadian Standards Association we have with us today four people: Ellen Pekilis, Project Manager; Jim Savary, Department of Economics, Glendon College, York University; Gérald Lavallée, Executive Director, Cable Television Standards Foundation; and Suzanne Morin, the Canadian representative on the International Standards Organization ad hoc privacy group.

B. considérant que, le 17 octobre, un groupe de dix partis d'opposition a uni ses forces en créant le "Conseil national d'un Mouvement unifié" et qu'il a publié un manifeste soulignant ses objectifs, partiellement soutenus par d'autres groupes parlementaires d'opposition, et qui sont notamment: des élections démocratiques précédées d'une vraie compétition entre les partis politiques sans intervention des institutions étatiques; de nouvelles modalités d'organisation des élections, avec la participation des représentants de tous les partis politiques; l'instauration d'un système parlementaire "à l'européenne", qui réduise le pouvoir de l'exécutif; l'indépendance du pouvoir judiciaire et la non-ingérence des structures gouvernementales dans les tribunaux; la restauration de l'intégrité territoriale et le retrait des forces de maintien de la paix/des contingents militaires russes de Géorgie; l'autonomie locale; l'éradication de la violence politique, la libération des "prisonniers politiques" et des enquêtes sur les décès inexpliqués survenus au cours des présidences Chevardnadze et Saakachvili; le rapprochement avec l'OTAN et l'UE, et la fin de l'appartenance à la CEI; la tenue d'élections parlementaires au printemps plutôt qu'en automne 2008, conformément au calendrier, et la modification du système électoral actuel, fondé sur le principe du "winner-takes-all",
B. whereas on 17 October a group of ten opposition parties joined forces in the so-called National Council of the General Public Movement and published a Manifesto outlining their goals that was partly supported by other opposition parliamentary groups, which goals included: democratic elections preceded by real competition between political parties and without the involvement of state institutions; reorganisation of the way in which the elections are administered, involving representatives of all political parties; establishment of a 'European-style' parliamentary system reducing the power of the executive branch; an independent judiciary and non-interference by government structures in the courts; restoration of territorial integrity and withdrawal of Russian peacekeeping forces/military contingents from Georgia; local self-governance; eradication of political violence, release of 'political prisoners' and investigation of unsolved deaths that occurred during the Shevardnadze and Saakashvili presidencies; rapprochement with NATO and the EU, and abolition of CIS membership; a call for Parliamentary elections according to schedule in spring instead of autumn 2008 and changes to the winner-takes-all electoral system,
