D. whereas on that occasion the European Parliament, whilst respecting the democratic will of the Greek Cypriot community, expressed its regret that it had not been able to reach a solution, and called on the Turkish authorities to maintain their constructive attitude in finding a settlement of the Cyprus question leading to an equitable solution, to be negotiated on the basis of the Annan plan and the principles upon which the EU is founded, and to effect an early withdrawal of its forces, pursuant to the relevant UN resolutions, in accordance with a specific timetable; whereas it expressed its belief that such a withdrawal of Turkish forces is a necessary step forward on the way to further easing tension, resuming dialogue between the parties and preparing for a lasting solution; whereas it called on the Turkish authorities to recognise the Republic of Cyprus; whereas it drew the attention of the Turkish authorities to the fact that the negotiations concerned are intergovernmental negotiations between Turkey on the one hand and the 25 Members of the EU on the other, the Republic of Cyprus being one of those Member States; whereas it noted that the opening of negotiations obviously implies the recognition of Cyprus by Turkey,

Par rapport à une éventuelle pause, à laquelle le président a fait allusion, nous voulons qu'il y ait une proposition sous la présidence grecque qui conclue les travaux, nous ne voulons pas que le résultat de la convention soit reporté aux calendes grecques, il doit y avoir un suivi et cela doit conduire à une décision du Conseil européen.
And in relation to the potential time gap mentioned by Mr Michel, we would like to see a proposal, under the Greek Presidency, that brings the work to a conclusion; we do not want the outcome of the Convention to be postponed indefinitely. It must have a follow-up and must lead to a decision from the European Council.
