se félicite de la ratification par la Grande Assemblée nationale turque du protocole facultatif se rapportant à la Convention des Nations unies contre la torture et demande à la Turquie d'en appliquer les dispositions sans délai et en coopération étroite avec le sous-comité pour la prévention de la torture et autres peines ou traitements cruels, inhumains ou dégradants;
Welcomes the ratification by the Turkish Grand National Assembly of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture, and calls on Turkey to implement its provisions without delay and in close cooperation with the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment;

Expresses its deep concern over the Şemdinli affair, which involved the bombing of a bookshop, allegedly by Turkish security forces, and the subsequent dismissal of the prosecutor Ferhat Sarikaya, which has been investigated by the Turkish Parliament; emphasises that it has serious concerns about the continued – not to say resurgent – role of the army in Turkish society; emphasises that objective and impartial investigations are necessary prerequisites to restoring public trust and ensuring the credibility of the judiciary; calls, therefore, for publication of the investigation report of the Turkish Grand Assembly;

Les élections à la Grande assemblée nationale turque se sont déroulées dans le respect total des règles démocratiques et de l'État de droit.

C'est pour cela que je voudrais terminer par un appel aux parlementaires turcs qui sont là-haut sur la tribune, et leur dire que s'ils veulent vraiment que cette Turquie qu'ils aiment et qu'ils gèrent aujourd'hui entre dans l'Union européenne, ils doivent savoir que les efforts que notre conception de la démocratie demande à la Turquie sont des efforts qui vont au-delà de ce qui est entrepris en ce moment par la grande Assemblée turque.
I would therefore like to end by appealing to the Turkish parliamentarians up there in the gallery, and say to them that if they really want the Turkey which they love and govern today to join the European Union, they must be aware that the efforts which our notion of democracy requires of Turkey are efforts which go beyond what is being undertaken at the moment by the Turkish Grand Assembly.
