Monsieur le Président, j'aimerais féliciter ma collègue pour son allocution et lui rappeler que le gouvernement libéral a connu une aussi fameuse embellie financière grâce à deux mesures du gouvernement conservateur précédent, soit l'Accord de libre-échange et l'implantation de la taxe sur les produits et services.
Mr. Speaker, I would like to congratulate my hon. colleague on her speech and remind her that the Liberal government had such a fine fiscal record thanks to two measures implemented by the previous Conservative government, that is the free trade agreement and the goods and services tax.

Si, comme d’autres collègues l’ont mentionné, nous parvenons maintenant à persuader la junte de libérer tous les prisonniers politiques, si nous parvenons à persuader la junte d’accorder à Aung San Suu Kyi une liberté totale, tant en termes de mouvement qu’en termes de déclarations publiques politiques, et, enfin, si le nouveau parlement et le nouveau gouvernement du Myanmar commencent à améliorer les droits de l’homme et les droits fondamentaux dans le pays, et à améliorer les conditions sociales et économiques du peuple birman, alors, peut-être que, dans quelques années, nos institutions auront des raisons de commencer à négocier et à se lier avec le régime birman et de voir un meilleur avenir pour ce pays.
If, as other colleagues have said, we can now persuade the junta to release all political prisoners, if we can persuade the junta to allow Aung San Suu Kyi complete freedom, both in terms of movement and in terms of political public statements, and, finally, if the new Burmese parliament and government start to improve human and fundamental rights in the country, and to improve the social and economic conditions of the people of Burma, then perhaps, in a few years time, there will be grounds for our institutions to start negotiating and engaging with the Burmese regime and to see a better future for that country.
