By adopting this behaviour, Greece showed that it did not intend to obtain from the employees the payment of the purchase price. This dramatically modified the situation in which the employees found themselves. Instead of having to pay a purchase price, the employees would not have to put at risk this amount of own money. This means that, when participating in the management of the yard, they attached less importance to the preservation and the increase of the value of the shares and the restoration of financial viability (and more to the preservation of the employment and of the working conditions).

The main shipbuilding regions have, however, been affected in different ways: Japanese yards have the advantage of strong domestic demand, especially for bulk carriers; South Korea and China are battling for tanker contracts; and the European Union is only really active in the ferries and small tankers segment, where replacement needs are building up, although it is possible that Korean shipbuilders might try to further penetrate this market segment.

Aides aux investissements 1. Les aides aux investissements, qu'elles soient spécifiques ou non, ne peuvent être octroyées pour la création de nouveaux chantiers navals ou pour des investissements dans des chantiers existants, à moins qu'elles ne soient liées à un plan de restructuration qui n'entraîne aucun accroissement de la capacité de construction navale de ce chantier ou, en cas d'accroissement, qu'elles soient liées directement à une réduction irréversible correspondante de la capacité d'autres chantiers du même État membre au cours de la même période.

Investment aid, whether specific or non-specific, may not be granted for the creation of new shipyards or for investment in existing yards unless it is linked to a restructuring plan which does not involve any increase in the shipbuilding capacity of the yard or unless it is directly linked to a corresponding irreversible reduction in the capacity of other yards in the same Member State over the same period.
