Au niveau communautaire, le règlement CEE/345/92, de janvier 1992 (portant onzième modification du règlement (CEE) nº 3094/86 relatif à certaines mesures techniques de conservation), a introduit une dérogation temporaire, applicable jusqu'au 31 décembre 1993, pour permettre à un nombre limité de navires (à savoir ceux qui avaient utilisé ce type de filet pour la pêche au thon germon dans l'Atlantique Nord-est au moins au cours des deux années précédant l'entrée en vigueur du règlement à l'examen) d'utiliser des filets pouvant atteindre une longueur de 5 km pour la capture de cette espèce (la longueur maximale autorisée était de 2,5 km pour le reste de la flotte communautaire).
At Community level, Regulation (EEC) No 345/92 of 27 January 1992 (amending for the 11th time Regulation (EEC) No 3094/86 laying down certain technical measures for the conservation of fishery resources) introduced a temporary derogation, applicable until 31 December 1993, to enable a limited number of vessels (i.e. those that had used this gear to fish for long-finned Albacore tuna in the North-East Atlantic during at least the two years preceding the entry into force of the new regulation) to use nets up to 5 kilometres long to catch this species (the maximum authorised length being 2.5 kilometres for the remainder of the Community fleet).

La campagne de pêche au thon (thon blanc ou germon atlantique) dans l'Atlantique du Nord-Est de cette année devant débuter dans les deux semaines à venir, la Commission européenne a organisé, le 16 mai dernier, une réunion regroupant à Bruxelles les autorités chargées de l'application de la réglementation en France, en Irlande, au Portugal, en Espagne et au Royaume-Uni, en vue d'examiner et approuver un train de mesures de nature à garantir l'application efficace des règlements concernant l'utilisation des filets dérivants et à éviter la répétition des conflits inacceptables entre groupes de pêcheurs qui ont émaillé la campagne 1994.
With this year's Northeast Atlantic tuna fishery (Albacore, also known as long-finned tuna or white tuna) expected to get under way within the next week or two, the European Commission held a meeting in Brussels on 16 May with the enforcement authorities of France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom to discuss and agree a set of measures designed to ensure efficient enforcement of the regulations concerning the use of drift nets and avoid any repetition of the unacceptable conflicts between different groups of fishermen which featured during the 1994 fishery.
