On September 5, 1995, a referendum was held on the question of amending Term 17, and over 54 per cent of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador voted to accept a new model for education, one that retains the denominational character of the current system but provides the provincial legislature with additional powers to organize and administer education in the province.
