The existing good operative cooperation between the national central banks (NCBs) and the national statistical institutes (NSIs), and between Eurostat and the European Central Bank (ECB), is an asset that should be preserved and further developed with a view to improving the overall consistency and quality of macroeconomic statistics, such as balance of payments statistics, financial statistics, government finance statistics and national accounts.

Mettre progressivement en place pour le SSE, en tenant compte des coûts de mise en œuvre générés au sein du SSE, une architecture permettant une production de statistiques européennes plus intégrée; harmoniser et normaliser les méthodes de production de statistiques et les métadonnées; renforcer l’intégration horizontale (entre les domaines statistiques) et verticale (entre les partenaires du SSE) des processus de production de statistiques au sein du SSE dans le respect du principe de subsidiarité; utiliser et intégrer des sources de données multiples; produire des statistiques multifonctionnelles.

Consequently, and although the members of the ESCB do not participate in the production of European statistics pursuant to this Regulation, following an agreement between a national central bank and the Community statistical authority, within their respective spheres of competence and without prejudice to national arrangements between the national central bank and the NSI or other national authorities, data produced by the national central bank may, however, be used, directly or indirectly, by NSIs, other national authorities and the Community statistical authority, for the production of European statistics.

Notes the progress made as regards drawing up statistics, but takes the view that more efforts must be made, including in the candidate countries, as regards statistics broken down by sex, which can provide objective information for identifying differences and problems between women and men and which make it possible to assess the integration of the gender dimension by highlighting the impact on women and men of the various policies implemented; calls on the Commission, to that end, to make full use of the funding possibilities offered by the new action programme (2001-2005) on gender equality, with a view to the drawing-up and regular updating of statistics; calls on the Commission to do everything possible to ensure that appropriate financial and technical assistance is provided for the candidate countries so that they can develop their statistical methods and adapt them to those used in the European Community;
