Three projects will become operational very shortly: - Greco (Groupement Européen pour la Circulation des Oeuvres), which seeks to encourage television broadcasting of fiction films made by independent European producers, with the long-term goal of fostering the emergence of independent production and distribution companies able to compete successfully on the European and world markets; - Ivens (support for documentaries), which aims to encourage and boost the production of documentaries and support their promotion among potential distributors; - MAP-TV (Memory Archives Programme), which is designed to encourage the use of audiovisual archive material for the production of programmes, documentaries and fiction films, so contributing to the development of a "second market" for programmes.

Encourager l'utilisation des archives audiovisuelles pour la réalisation de programmes, documentaires ou films de fiction et contribuer ainsi au développement du "second marché" des programmes, tel est l'objectif du projet MAP-TV (Mémoires- Archives- Programmes), qui a été proposé par M. The objectives of the MAP-TV project (Memory-Archives-Programmes) are to promote the use of audiovisual archive material for making programmes, documentaries and other films and, in so doing, to promote the development of a second market in programmes. The project, which was proposed by Mr Jean Dondelinger, a Member of the Commission, as part of the Community Media programme (1991-95), was endorsed by the Audiovisual Eureka Coordinators Committee on 25 January.

L'objectif principal de ce projet est de contribuer a la solution du probleme de l'alimentation des media audiovisuels en programmes de fiction, notamment en stimulant le developpement de l'industrie cinematographique et des programmes europeennes : une industrie aujourd'hui fortement concurrencee par les productions en provenance des pays tiers et qui risque de l'etre encore davantage suite a l'introduction et a l'extension des transmissions par cable et par satellite.
The main aim of this proposal is to tackle the problem of supplying non-documentary material to the audio-visual media primarily by encouraging the development of the European cinema and programme industry. The industry is currently facing strong competition from productions originating in non-member countries and is liable to be still further beleaguered following the introduction and spread of cable and satellite broadcasting.
