I. whereas freedom of the press is still under great pressure in Egypt and journalists are still being detained on the basis of unfounded allegations; whereas a number of journalists were prosecuted in 2014 on charges related to threatening national unity and social peace, spreading false news reports and collaborating with the Muslim Brotherhood; whereas the Court of Cassation, Egypt’s highest court of law, ruled that there were procedural failings in the trial of journalists Mohammed Fahmy, Peter Greste and Baher Mohamed from Al-Jazeera; whereas, however, the three journalists are set for retrial and charges of ‘falsifying news’ and ’involvement with the Muslim Brotherhood’ against them have not been dropped; whereas three other journalists – Sue Turton, Dominic Kane and Rena Netjes – were sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison; whereas Egyptian journalists Mahmoud Abdel Nabi, Mahmoud Abu Zeid, Samhi Mustafa, Ahmed Gamal, Ahmed Fouad and Abdel Rahman Shaheen were convicted for merely carrying out their legitimate activities; whereas there is extreme polarisation of the Egyptian media into pro- and anti-Morsi factions, which is reinforcing the polarisation of Egyptian society;

4. prend acte de l'arrêt de la cour de cassation imposant la tenue d'un nouveau procès des journalistes d'Al-Jazeera Mohammed Fahmy, Peter Greste et Baher Mohamed; fait toutefois observer que cet arrêt a été rendu pour des motifs de procédure uniquement, que les trois journalistes doivent être libérés immédiatement et sans condition et que les chefs d'inculpation de "falsification d'informations" et d'"association aux Frères musulmans" doivent être abandonnés;
4. Takes note of the ruling of the Cassation Court that a retrial of Al-Jazeera journalists Mohammed Fahmy, Peter Greste and Baher Mohamed must be launched; notes, however, that this ruling is based only on procedural grounds and that all three journalists should be released immediately and unconditionally and that charges of ‘falsifying news’ and ‘involvement with the Muslim Brotherhood’ should be dropped;

M. whereas on 23 June 2014, Al-Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fadel Fahmy, Peter Greste, and Baher Mohamed were sentenced to between seven and 10 years in prison on charges of reporting ‘false news’ and conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood; whereas three other journalists - Sue Turton, Dominic Kane, and Rena Netjes- were sentenced to 10 years in absentia; whereas on 1 January 2015, the Egyptian Court of Cassation ordered the re-trial of the case; whereas the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, denounced these legal proceedings as ‘rife with procedural irregularities and in breach of international human rights law’; whereas at least 14 other journalists are currently in jail, placing the country among the world’s worst media repressors, according to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists; whereas self-censorship has increased dramatically since summer 2013;
