I want first of all to thank very sincerely Mrs del Castillo Vera, Mr Harbour, Mrs Pleguezuelos Aguilar, the shadow rapporteurs, the political groups, the chairmen of the committees and their secretariats, the Presidency of the Council and the European Commission for their tireless work throughout these long months, and I thank all those fellow Members who have chosen to place their confidence in me by giving me their support.

I would like to begin by thanking Senator Lovelace Nicholas for the comments she made on March 22, 2007, in this chamber, where she outlined the desperation and disappointment that is felt throughout the Aboriginal community.

– (FR) Mr President, I should like straightaway to start by thanking my fellow shadow rapporteurs, who are present: Mr Bushill-Matthews, Mrs McAvan, Mrs Evans, Mrs Sinnott and Mrs Belohorská. I must say that my contact with them has been particularly intense and fruitful since my appointment as rapporteur, nine months ago.

I would like, at the outset, to thank all those in this House who helped make it possible for this result to be achieved, in particular Mr Lewandowski, Mr Walter and Mr Mulder, who made up the negotiating team, along with the groups’ coordinators and staff, with especial thanks to the staff of the Bureau, who have really done a splendid job of work over the past months.
