Je tiens aussi à dire - et c’est en réalité un appel au Conseil, mais je m’adresse aujourd’hui à la Commission et au Parlement - que nous ne devons pas nous contenter de belles déclarations dans lesquelles nous exprimons notre soutien à la Serbie, nous devons aussi lui réserver une place dans notre budget, le budget de l’Union européenne, pour éviter de devoir conclure prochainement que le seul moyen dont nous disposons pour aider la Serbie consiste à prélever de l’argent dans d’autres projets de soutien aux Balkans.
I would also like to say – and this is more of an appeal to the Council, but I am sharing it with the Commission and Parliament for now – let us not just make fine declarations with regard to the aid which we will soon be willing to grant to Serbia, but let us also make room for this cause in our own budget, the European Union’s budget, so that we do not end up concluding that we can only help Serbia by taking funding away from other projects in the Balkans which need our support.

Let me make one last comment: in the coming years, we will all have to push hard for real new money to be made available to Turkey, which is now a candidate country – and indeed to the other candidates for accession – rather than merely bundling the existing programmes together. Without new money, the candidates for accession will be unable to fulfil the criteria which we have established for them.
