May I say that, as a former Agriculture Minister, I was particularly interested in the long article in which Jacques Cernon, the facts at his fingertips, examined the rivalry in the production and marketing of agricultural produce, an area in which little has changed over the last twenty years: the rivalry continues, large American firms still dominate the food market in the United States and are a force to be reckoned with in our own, the agricultural balance remains in their favour, and negotiations have failed to result either in them dismantling their vast programme of aids to what is, by its very nature, a fully integrated and omnipresent production system, or in us abandoning the Common Agricultural Policy, the first genuinely Community policy, and one which has not only evolved to eliminate the risk of the overproduction of food, and the fierce infighting this causes, but also - in its early stages - put an end to the hunger afflicting millions of Europeans after the Second World War.
