It is true that Europe now already has programmes to cover and encourage creative activity, the movement of works, the mobility of creative artists and stakeholders and professionals in the culture sector, and film- and audio-visual programme-making; however, in addition to this body of measures, which should be developed to the most useful effect, further programmes are needed in order to encompass the European cultural heritage more specifically and systematically, bearing in mind that one of its founding sources is in grave danger of disappearing and, moreover, within the Union, there is still a great deal of ignorance on all sides about the national forms in which the common cultural heritage has found practical expression in the Member States and in other European countries down through the centuries.

J’ai voté en faveur du rapport sur le label du patrimoine européen parce que l’Europe s’est fixé pour objectif de créer une identité commune, de rapprocher l’Union européenne de ses citoyens à travers la prise de conscience de ce patrimoine historique et culturel riche et varié, auquel chacun s’identifie et au travers duquel les jeunes peuvent découvrir leur propre identité et la partager avec les autres jeunes Européens.
I voted for the report on the European Heritage Label because Europe has set itself the goal of creating a common identity, bringing the EU closer to its citizens through awareness of this rich and diverse historical and cultural heritage with which everyone identifies and through which young people can learn and find out about their own identity, sharing it with the other young Europeans.
