En anglais, deux termes très semblables désignent respectivement la mèche (fuse) et la fusée (fuze). Bien que ces deux mots aient une origine commune (fusée, fusil en français) et soient parfois considérés comme deux orthographes différentes d'un même terme, il est utile de maintenir la convention selon laquelle fuse fait référence à un dispositif d'allumage de type mèche tandis que fuze se réfère à un dispositif utilisé pour les munitions, qui intègre des composantes mécaniques, électriques, chimiques ou hydrostatiques pour déclencher une chaîne par déflagration ou détonation.
