However, with a global commitment level of 80% of the reference sum for 2002-2006, broken down into 64 projects covering as many as 76 countries, whose detailed examination highlights the complementarity of the national and Community levels (48 initiatives emanated from the Member States and 16 from the Commission and/or OLAF), Pericles has fully achieved the objectives assigned to it: it may be stressed, notably, that outside the Member States and accession countries (Bulgaria and Romania), it has also made it possible to identify sensitive geographical areas for the production of counterfeit notes, such as Colombia.

Avec un niveau global d’engagements de 80% du montant de référence initial au cours de la période 2002-2006, ventilé sur 64 projets concernant pas moins de 76 pays, et dont l’examen détaillé montre la complémentarité des niveaux nationaux et communautaires (sur les 64 initiatives, 48 émanaient des états membres et 16 de la Commission ou de l’OLAF), le programme a pris une dimension internationale, avec la participation non seulement des états membres et des candidats à l’adhésion, mais également d’autres pays tiers où la production de faux billets est très développée, comme la Colombie. Ce déploiement international du programme a donné lieu à des améliorations structurelles notables, avec la création et l’instauration dans différents pays d’offices centraux nationaux chargés de la lutte contre la falsification de la monnaie. Nous avons pu compter sur la participation systématique de la Banque centrale européenne, ainsi que d’autres organisations telles qu’Europol, l’OLAF et Interpol.
In particular, the perception of the Community dimension of the euro has been improved and it has given the participants a better understanding of the legislation and instruments available; an overall commitment of 80% of the initial reference sum during the period 2002-2006 has been achieved; 64 projects have been implemented involving 76 countries; the effective complementarity of national and Community actions has been emphasised − 48 of the 64 initiatives emerged from the Member States, while 16 came from the Commission or OLAF; the programme has taken on an international dimension, with the involvement not just of all of the Members States and those about to join, but also of other non-EU countries in which the production of counterfeit banknotes is widespread, such as Colombia; considerable structural improvements have been made, with the creation and establishment in several countries of national central offices responsible for combating the counterfeiting of the currency; and there has been systematic involvement of the European Central Bank and other organisations, such as Europol, OLAF and Interpol.

The adoption of a large number of programmes under the Leader II Community Initiative (48 programmes have been approved to date) has added to the Community's rural development effort which includes, in addition to Leader II, the Objective 1, 5(a) and 5(b) programmes - practically all of which have been approved - and the European Rural Development Network, launched this year and for which a body given the task of assisting the Commission is now operational.
