Désormais, un million de citoyens européens (soit seulement 0,2 % de la population de l’UE) pourra demander à la Commission de présenter des propositions dans certains domaines: un pas important vers la démocratie participative, qui devrait permettre et encourager les débats transnationaux en Europe, puisque l’initiative doit être portée par des citoyens résidant dans divers États membres; une avancée considérable pour rapprocher les citoyens de l’Europe, en espérant que ce nouvel instrument sera réellement utilisé par les citoyens européens, qu’il sera efficace et que la Commission saura suivre les propositions des citoyens.
From now on, one million European citizens, that is to say just 0.2% of the EU population, can ask the Commission to put forward proposals in certain areas: an important step towards participatory democracy, which should enable and encourage cross-border debates in Europe as the initiative must be brought by citizens residing in various Member States; a significant step forward in bringing together the citizens of Europe, in the hope that this new instrument will actually be used by European citizens, that it will be effective and that the European Commission will be able to follow the proposals put forward by citizens.
