Certains députés se sont vivement opposés, en janvier et en février, à la motion instituant le comité des sages - ils pensaient en effet qu’il s’agissait d’une sorte de coup de main visant à tout noyer par le biais de la création d’un comité. Je voudrais leur dire la chose suivante: je pense qu’ils se rendent compte qu’ils ont commis une grosse erreur, d’optique et de raisonnement, et qu’ils devraient retirer tout au moins toutes les critiques émises alors à l’encontre de cet élan apporté, de façon fort positive selon moi, par le Parlement européen, par ceux qui ont voté l'institution du comité des sages.
Firstly, I would like to say to my colleagues who, in January and February, protested against the motion which established the Committee of Wise Men, thinking that it was a kind of manoeuvring to stifle everything through the creation of a committee, that I think they realise they were very wrong in their viewpoint and reasoning, and they should at least withdraw all the criticisms they made at that time of the European Parliament’s initiative, which I believe was a positive move, on the part of those Members who voted to establish the Group of the Wise Men.

The consequences of the Inquiry Committee's ferocious criticisms of the Commission's historical failure to separate food safety/consumer interests from agriculture / food production interests, and the concomitant threat of a motion of censure against the Commission if it failed to do something about it, resulted in a radical re-organisation of these services, including the transfer to the Consumer Protection DG of the scientific committees advising on food safety, which it was agreed would in future operate with greater transparency and openness.
