Cette présidence, Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs, est une présidence d’un pays pro-européen, d’un pays qui comprend clairement qu’il défend ses propres intérêts à travers le projet européen, dans un pays engagé dans des idéaux européens, dans un pays dirigé par des hommes politiques européens qui comprennent clairement que l’Europe a besoin de développer le projet européen, et ce projet européen est probablement le plus généreux, le plus fondamental et le plus important des temps modernes, que ce projet européen est important pour les Européens, pour l’économie européenne et aussi pour le monde.
This Presidency, Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, is a Presidency of a pro-European country, a country that clearly understands that it is defending its own interests through the European project, in a country committed to European ideals, in a country led by European politicians who clearly understand that what Europe needs is to develop the European project and that this European project is probably the most generous, most critical and most important project of modern times, that this European project is important for Europeans, for the European economy, and also important for the world.

Dans ce sens, je dis que M. le Président Chirac avance dans la bonne direction et je crois que le Premier ministre, M. Jospin, pourra le rattraper rapidement en étant résolument, plus clairement pro-européen.
From this point of view, I would say that President Chirac is going in the right direction and I think that Prime Minister Jospin would be able to catch up with him if he were more clearly and resolutely pro-European.
