Russia's conquest of the Caucasus had been in preparation since the reign of Catherine II (1792-1796), and took place in two stages: first of all, with Cossack aid, lines of defence were created in Northern Caucasia (hence the founding of Vladikavkaz in 1784), and then these were used as a basis for penetrating into Transcaucasia via the Cross Ridge (in modern Georgia) and along the Caspian Sea.
