The clear references to strengthening competitiveness, the proposal to compile a list of priorities, the recommendation on reducing the number of priorities in order to focus efforts on smaller research projects, the suffocating controls on every research activity will, if adopted by the Council and the Commission, result in a nightmarish structure which will smother research and researchers, wipe out any freedom in the search for new knowledge and radically change the nature of research as a process of producing new knowledge and as a productive force, especially in countries such as Greece, where nearly all research activity revolves around European funding.

Sur proposition de Mme Edith CRESSON, commissaire à la recherche, à l'éducation et à la formation, la Commission vient d'approuver une nouvelle liste de 306 chercheurs européens qui vont bénéficier de bourses financées par le programme "capital humain et mobilité" et qui, à ce titre, pourront mener leurs travaux de recherche dans des laboratoires et instituts d'autres Etats membres.
On a proposal from Mrs Edith Cresson, the Commission member responsible for research, education and training, the Commission has approved the latest list of 306 European researchers who will receive grants under the human capital and mobility programme so that they can continue their research in laboratories and institutes in other Member States.
