This Integrated Roadmap should consolidate the (up dated) technology roadmaps of the SET Plan while retaining the technology specificities; it should cover the entire research and innovation chain from basic research to demonstration and support for market roll-out; and it should identify clear roles and tasks for the various stakeholders such as the EERA, the EIIs, the EIT, relevant European PPPs and other stakeholders such as universities, investors and financiers while promoting synergies and interactions between them.

Experience gained since the adoption of Council Directive 87/22/EEC of 22 December 1986 on the approximation of national measures relating to the placing on the market of high-technology medicinal products, particularly those derived from biotechnology has shown that it is necessary to create a centralised authorisation procedure that is compulsory for high-technology medicinal products, particularly those resulting from biotechnical processes, in order to maintain the high level of scientific evaluation of these medicinal products in the European Union and thus to preserve the confidence of patients and the medical professions in the evaluation.

(iii) or that the medicinal product is essentially similar to a medicinal product which has been authorized within the Community, in accordance with Community provisions in force, for not less than six years and is marketed in the Member State for which the application is made. This period shall be extended to 10 years in the case of high-technology medicinal products having been authorised according to the procedure laid down in Article 2(5) of Council Directive 87/22/EEC(21). Furthermore, a Member State may also extend this period to 10 years by a single Decision covering all the medicinal products marketed on its territory where it considers this necessary in the interest of public health.
