Au niveau européen, le rapport du Parlement européen de 2006 (le «rapport Schmidt») et l’avis exploratoire publié en 2005 par le Comité économique et social européen (CESE) (rapporteur: Richard Adams) contenaient des considérations relatives au commerce équitable et à des systèmes privés similaires d’assurance de la durabilité.
At a European level, the 2006 report of the European Parliament (the "Schmidt Report") and the 2005 exploratory opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) (rapporteur Richard Adams) presented considerations relating to Fair Trade and similar private sustainability schemes.

Consulté par le Conseil sur la directive établissant un système commun de taxe sur les transactions financières (TTF), le CESE (Rapporteur Stefano Palmieri, Groupe II–IT) a, dans le sillage du Parlement européen, accueilli favorablement la proposition d'instauration d'une TTF, et a confirmé la position adoptée dans deux de ses précédents avis.
Following a referral by the Council on the Directive on a common system of financial transaction tax, the EESC (Rapporteur Stefano Palmieri, Group II–IT) welcomed the proposal to introduce an FTT, in line with the European Parliament, and reiterated the position adopted in two previous opinions.

She would like to draw the BUDG and TRAN committees' attention that further impact assessments should be carried out on the opportunity and consequences of any additional task that would be proposed by the lead committee (c.f. working document by the lead Rapporteur, EESC opinion), including in budgetary and staff terms, in line with the Inter-Institutional Common Approach to Impact Assessment (IA) regarding substantive amendments.
