Je n'ai rien contre l'idée qu'il y ait un certain nombre de sénateurs indépendants, mais si on en vient au point où on encourage de plus en plus les sénateurs à devenir indépendants, j'estime que nous nous dirigeons vers l'établissement d'un régime politique à l'américaine et que nous nous éloignons de notre système de gouvernement responsable, un système que nous avons trouvé merveilleusement satisfaisant au fil des ans dans notre pays.
I have nothing against the idea of a certain number of independent senators, but when we get to the position where we make it more and more attractive for senators to be independent, I put it to honourable senators that we are moving toward a congressional system of government and away from our system of responsible government, a system which, in this country, we have found to be wonderfully satisfactory over the years.
