Such a body would maintain contacts between the national authorities and centralize and disseminate the information received on cross-border crime; it would ensure that evidence and other material received from a Member State or a third country corresponded with the requirements of the country for which they were intended; it would carry out investigations and forward the findings to the national authorities in cases where such authorities were able to initiate criminal proceedings, etc.;
