They have long supported the creation of a European defence pillar within NATO (which was, after all, President Kennedy's dream) but in practice they almost seem to welcome the fact that this has never matured - and they warn, at the first hint of European defence cooperation outside American control, that this will only serve to hasten US disengagement from Europe.
