In 2006, the Council and the European Parliament adopted the Data Retention Directive to enable national authorities to combat serious crime by retaining telecommunication traffic and location data.[1] The Council then took up the Swedish initiative to simplify the cross-border exchange of information in criminal investigations and intelligence operations.
