Les objectifs déclarés de la BFC sont : la pêche exploratoire, le développement de nouvelles pêches côtières et de pêches émergentes, le développement des pêches hauturières, le recrutement et la formation des Inuits pour des emplois existants et nouveaux dans l’industrie de la pêche hauturière, l’investissement dans un navire de pêche appartenant au Nunavut, la représentation pour obtenir un accès accru à d’autres quotas de pêche, dont le flétan noir de la division 0B, l’encouragement de la recherche scientifique et l’administration de l’initiative, y compris la préparation d’appels de propositions([34]).
