Ils ont souligné le rôle-clé du multilatéralisme dans la solution des grands problèmes de notre temps et la contribution spécifique que peut apporter le Conseil de l’Europe – de par son rôle dans les domaines normatif, de suivi, de sensibilisation et d’assistance aux Etats membres – dans le cadre d’un effort commun et concerté pour renforcer l’unité du continent européen et éviter de nouvelles divisions.
They stressed the key role of multilateralism as a means of solving the major problems of our time and the specific contribution the Council of Europe could make – through its role in the areas of standard-setting, monitoring, awareness-raising and assistance to member states – as part of a concerted effort to strengthen the unity of the European continent and avoid further dividing lines.

Pour conclure, je souhaite que le Conseil et la Commission, de concert avec le Parlement européen, surtout à la veille de la présidence italienne, créent les conditions géopolitiques permettant de concrétiser le projet d’une Europe rénovée, non seulement élargie sur le plan politique, mais aussi grandie en termes économiques et sociaux, afin que des pays différents, mais ayant des intérêts communs, contribuent à une unité forte, dans la diversité de leur histoire et de leurs expériences.
In conclusion, I hope that the Council and the Commission, together with the European Parliament, especially given the impending start of the Italian Presidency, will create better geopolitical conditions for carrying through the project for a renewed Europe, a Europe which is not just politically wider but which has grown in economic and social terms too, so that countries which are different but which have common interests make up a healthy whole, despite the differences in their history and individual experiences.
