IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

3 Supports the setting-up of a new preparatory action in the field of sport with an annual budget of EUR 5 million under Heading 3b - given that Article 149 of the Treaty establishing the European Community, as amended by the Treaty of Lisbon on the functioning of the European Union, adds a new EU competence in the area of sport, including incentive measures - to be followed by an EU funding programme on sport; requests the continuation and full development of the pilot projects proposed by its Committee on Culture and Education, especially the project on artist mobility proposed last year and, within the preparatory action in the field of sport, the funding proposal for the Special Olympics' Unified Sports Programme consistently supported by that Committee; supports the continuation, under Heading 4, of the preparatory action of MEDIA INTERNATIONAL that enlarges the scope of the EU's media policy internationally in a positive way;

In July 2000, following the proposal of the Greek Government through the Minister for Foreign Affairs at the time, Georgios Papandreou, who was also the inspiration behind it, we safeguarded the Olympic Truce institutionally with the foundation by the International Olympic Committee and the Greek Government of an International Olympic Truce Centre and an International Olympic Truce Foundation, as a platform for debate with the objective of resolving conflicts and establishing the culture of peace through sport and the Olympic ideal and galvanising people, especially young people, into action.

Calls on the Commission, in the run-up to the Olympics, to ask the key players of the world sportswear and athletic footwear industry – sportswear brands, the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry, and the IOC – to start negotiations aiming at a sectoral solution fully complying with ILO labour standards;
