With its Communication the Commission: - underlines the essential need to integrate the European Union's gas system and to ensure that EU co-operation is at its most effective in the event of a major crisis, thereby improving overall EU security of supply; - recommends an analysis of the costs and benefits of the various options to increase supply security such as creating more underground storage capacity, investigating the level of industrial and power generation interruptibility among Member States and the implications for security of supply in case of a major crisis as well as investigating the potential for mutual support of gas and electricity systems; - emphasizes that a diversified gas supply portfolio for the EU remains an essential condition for supply security in the long term and suggests closer ties and co-operation with suppliers.
