Le lancement de l’initiative “bibliothèques numériques” fait suite à une lettre du 28 avril 2005 adressée aux présidents du Conseil européen et de la Commission par six chefs d’État ou de gouvernement préconisant la création d’une bibliothèque européenne virtuelle.Dans sa lettre du 7 juillet 2005, M. Barroso a réagi positivement à cette suggestion en soulignant la volonté de la Commission d’œuvrer à la réalisation d’une telle bibliothèque européenne virtuelle et en rappelant les travaux déjà entrepris dans ce domaine au niveau européen.
The digital libraries initiative follows up a letter of 28 April 2005 to the Presidents of the European Council and of the Commission by six Heads of State and Government. In the letter, they advocate the creation of a virtual European library. In his letter of 7 July 2005, Mr Barroso gave a positive reply to this suggestion, indicating the willingness of the Commission to work towards such a virtual European library and pointing to the work already undertaken in this area at European level.
