Le 25 octobre 2002, la société Makivik et le gouvernement fédéral ont signé l’Accord de principe de la région marine du Nunavik; cet accord crée, entre autres, une région marine autour du Nouveau-Québec près de la mer du Labrador, qui traverse le détroit d’Hudson et va jusqu’au fond de la baie d’Hudson et qui garantit aux Nunavummiut une part du flétan noir dans certaines zones situées au-delà de la région marine en question.
On 25 October 2002, Makivik Corporation and the federal government signed the Nunavik Marine Region (NMR) Agreement-in-Principle (AIP). Among other things, the NMR AIP: will create a marine region for Nunavik that will encircle northern Quebec’s coastline near the Labrador Sea through the Hudson Strait and down the Hudson Bay Coast; and guarantee Nunavimmiut a percentage of turbot catches in some areas outside the NMR.

Cette proposition contenait trois volets stratégiques : assurer les droits des Inuits du Nunavik dans le cadre d’un Accord de principe de la région marine du Nunavik; produire une stratégie de développement de la pêche, à l’avantage du Nunavut et du Nunavik; réviser l’article 15.3.7 de l’ARTN afin de clarifier les droits des Inuits du Nunavut.
The joint proposal contained three strategic components: securing Nunavik Inuit rights under a Nunavik Inuit Marine Region Agreement; providing a fisheries development strategy for the benefit of both Nunavut and Nunavik; and revising Article 15.3.7 of the NLCA to clarify Nunavut Inuit rights.

Les programmes de surveillance sont compatibles au sein des régions et sous-régions marines et reposent sur les dispositions applicables en matière d’évaluation et de surveillance établies par la législation communautaire, en particulier les directives «habitats» et «oiseaux», ou en vertu d’accords internationaux, et sont compatibles avec ces dispositions.
Monitoring programmes shall be compatible within marine regions or subregions and shall build upon, and be compatible with, relevant provisions for assessment and monitoring laid down by Community legislation, including the Habitats and Birds Directives, or under international agreements.

L'Accord de principe sur la région marine du Nunavik reconnaît la Société Makivik et ses filiales; en 2003, le ministre des Pêches et des Océans en a tenu compte et a octroyé à la Société Makivik une proportion de l'augmentation globale.
The Nunavik Inuit Marine Region Agreement-in-Principle recognizes Makivik Corporation and its subsidiaries and, accordingly, in 2003, the Minister of Fisheries recognized this and awarded a percentage of the overall increase to Makivik Corporation.
