The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) hosted an initial information meeting and dialogue with European civil society organisations and networks in Brussels on 18 April. This meeting was held at the request of the European Convention and was attended by its vice-chairman Jean-Luc Dehaene. It brought together about one hundred persons from organisations representing a very wide cross-section of organised civil society: socio-occupational organisations, voluntary bodies, NGOs active in the social, environment, human rights, educational and cultural sectors, and religious bodies.
Op verzoek van de Europese Conventie en in aanwezigheid van haar vice-voorzitter Jean-Luc Dehaene is op 18 april jl. bij het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité (EESC) te Brussel een eerste voorlichtings- en overlegbijeenkomst gehouden met zo'n honderd vertegenwoordigers van allerlei Europese maatschappelijke organisaties en hun netwerken: sociale en beroepsorganisaties, verenigingen, NGO's die zich met sociale vraagstukken, milieu, mensenrechten, onderwijs en cultuur bezighouden, levensbeschouwelijke en godsdienstige groeperingen.

2 (Rule of law). Each partner should be able to commit itself to the development of the rule of law and of democracy in its internal political system (free and regular elections to governing and representative bodies, independent judiciary, balance of powers and good governance), with the partners recognizing at the same time the right of each of them to choose and freely develop its own political, socio-cultural and economic system, provided it complies with commonly agreed international standards concerning human rights.
2 (Rechtsstaat) : alle partners zouden zich moeten kunnen verbinden tot de totstandbrenging van de rechtsstaat en democratie binnen hun intern politiek bestel (op gezette tijden vrije verkiezingen voor de leidinggevende en vertegenwoordigende instanties, onafhankelijke rechtspraak, evenwicht van de machten, behoorlijk bestuur), waarbij zij gelijktijdig het recht erkennen van elk van hen om in alle vrijheid te kiezen voor een politiek, sociaal-cultureel en economisch bestel en dat te ontwikkelen, op voorwaarde dat het conform de algemeen erkende internationale normen inzake mensenrechten is.
