European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard will represent the European Union in the annual Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting in Majuro, Marshall Islands, on 3-5 September.

The EU has concluded various partnership agreements with the Pacific region. Following the Cancún Climate Change Conference, Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner for Development and Tuiloma Neroni Slade, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, launched today a 'Joint Pacific-EU Initiative on Climate Change'.

Therefore, regional cooperation shall be further intensified by encouraging the existing regional organisations, in particular the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), to implement the Pacific Plan, and key CROPs (Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific), such as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, and also by building on synergies and cooperation with the OCTs in the region.
11. The October 2005 decision of the Forum leaders to adopt a new Agreement establishing the Pacific Islands Forum as an intergovernmental organisation in accordance with international law offers a good opportunity to strengthen the dialogue between the EU and the Pacific region in order to address the abovementioned shortcomings of the Post-Forum Dialogue.

Moreover, 2005 brought renewed impetus towards cooperation in the Pacific region, with the adoption of the Pacific Plan by all 16 member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum, including 14 Pacific ACP countries [2], Australia and New Zealand.

The proposal is to enhance the political dialogue with the Pacific by increasing contact primarily with and through the Pacific Islands Forum which is the main regional institution for political issues which is about to secure international legal status and which has a mandate and coherent regional policies set out in the Pacific Plan.

In view of the full support given by the Government and Parliament of the Solomon Islands to the police-led operation being prepared by the member states of the Pacific Islands Forum, the EU has begun to consider carefully and constructively what further support to give to a renewed donor effort for the overall and long-term programme of stabilisation in the Solomon Islands.
